Headstone engraving and lettering is planned around the material, setting and inscription. Letter height, spacing, depth and finish all affect how the wording sits on the stone and how clearly it reads over time.
We can advise on traditional hand-cut lettering, CNC cutting and sandblasting. The method is chosen according to the stone and the finish required.
Personalised carving services may include symbols, floral detail, religious emblems, military references, family crests, figures or other carved elements.
Some details are better suited to softer stones such as limestone, slate, marble or sandstone. Polished granite may suit detailed etched designs. We will explain what is realistic before the work is planned.
Bespoke stone carving is considered individually. Some commissions call for traditional hand cutting, particularly where the finish needs to match older work or where the lettering is a main part of the design.
Other memorials are better suited to CNC cutting or sandblasting, especially where the stone is harder, the layout is complex or a consistent finish is needed.

Hand-cut engraving creates a traditional V-shaped groove and can reflect light in a distinctive way. It is often suited to softer stones and to work where an older inscription needs to be matched.
Sandblasting uses a stencil and is commonly used on granite. It can be combined with painted or gilded lettering where suitable.
CNC cutting uses digital layouts and can be used for lettering, shapes, curves, edges, roses, figures and other details.
Where an existing memorial needs further work, we consider the original lettering style, spacing, letter height, surface condition and finish. The aim is for new lettering or carved detail to sit naturally with what is already there.
