What to Expect: Commissioning a Memorial

A measured process, with time to consider each decision

Understanding the memorial commissioning process

You do not need to have decided on the stone, shape, or inscription before contacting us.

The memorial commissioning process usually begins with a discussion at our showroom, by telephone or by email. We will ask what the memorial is for, where it will be placed, and whether you already have any ideas.

Your first discussion

We will discuss the type of memorial, the location, stone, size, inscription, and any carved or decorative detail. There is no requirement to settle everything during one appointment.

Design and estimate

Following the initial discussion, we prepare suitable ideas and an estimate. You can consider the proposal and request changes to the design, stone, wording or other details.

Permissions and paperwork

Most memorials require approval from the cemetery, church, diocese, council or other responsible authority. The rules may affect the material, dimensions, finish, lettering and design.
We help prepare the application and liaise with the authority where appropriate. Paperwork can be sent digitally or by post, according to your preference. Approval remains subject to the relevant authority.

Inscription approval

Before an inscription is cut, we prepare a layout showing the wording, spacing and arrangement. You will be asked to check the names, dates, spelling and punctuation. The lettering finish and any carved detail will also be agreed before this part of the work proceeds.

Making and installation

Once the design, wording and necessary permission have been agreed, the memorial is prepared in our workshop.
The work may include shaping the stone, producing the inscription, carving details and preparing the memorial for its setting. Our team then arranges installation, subject to access, ground conditions and the requirements of the authority responsible for the site.
Burslem remains available after installation for additional inscriptions and restoration and cleaning where required.
